A Professional IP Video Management Solution For Your Business
It seems that CCTV (closed-circuit television) surveillance camera systems have been around forever, but IP cameras and IP video management systems are comparatively new developments. In fact, they contribute so much to the security and versatility of CCTV systems that you should not have a CCTV system fitted unless it is fully IP (Internet Protocol)-enabled.
Why An IP-enabled System?
Traditional CCTV systems work on a closed circuit – hence the name – but what does this imply and why is an IP-enabled setup and an IP video management system better? CCTV systems are networked and all the cameras and the monitors they relay their video feeds to are on the same closed network. These cameras’ video feeds cannot be transmitted outside this closed network. This means that there has to be 24-hour security personnel in a control room manning all the monitors.
An IP video management solution can do this, but it can also transmit all the cameras’ video feeds to any secure destination via the Internet. It is easy to see why this opens up a world of possibilities.
- Instead of employing permanent control room staff, the video feeds can be relayed via IP to your armed response company, which monitors them remotely.
- In addition, you can check in on a secure website at any time and look at the video feeds yourself.
Managing The System
Of course, managing hundreds or even thousands of live video feeds can become a nightmare and an IP video management system is essential to disseminate the data. Firstly, the video feeds are relatively useless if they are not being recorded. Your security staff may spot a crime in progress on the monitor, but unless it is recorded, there is no evidence to use in court. Large IP surveillance camera networks require a digital video recorder to record the video in compressed formats while indexing them for later use.

A Secure Biometric Access Control Solution
Once the stuff of science-fiction, today biometric access control is a reality and a very important part of many companies’ security solutions. Modern technology has made it possible to electronically recognise people’s unique physical characteristics to allow a 100% positive verification of their identity to be made. There are scanners that can scan a person’s hand geometry, their iris or retina or recognise their voice. The most common type is the fingerprint scanner.
Fingerprint Biometric Access Control
The fingerprint scanner is the easiest and cheapest to manufacture because of its small size and the fact that it only has to focus at a set distance. These scanners are compact and are by far the most widely used biometric systems in access control applications. Outdoor models are weather-proof and ideal for opening boom gates for cars entering a restricted area. The user presses their finger against the little glass scanning window and the reader instantly compares the fingerprint with those of authorised fingerprints in its database.
A fingerprint is unique and fingerprint biometric access control scanners usually do not detect the finger unless warm and moist like a real human’s – therefore, this type of biometric identification is very difficult, if not impossible, to circumvent. Normally, two fingerprints per authorised person are scanned into the database. Mobile fingerprint scanners can connect to a personal computer via USB, with the database residing on the computer’s hard disk drive.
The Alternatives
There are cheaper alternatives to biometric access control systems like these, but they are also less secure. In the past, keypad-based or key card access control systems were popular, but they require the user to either remember a PIN or password (which has to be entered on the keypad) or carry a tag or key card (that has to be held in close proximity to a receiver). Credential theft and loss is a big risk in both cases.
Instead, have a secure biometric access control system installed today. Contact us

Digital Video Management For A Complete Surveillance Solution
A CCTV system is certainly effective in discouraging and detecting crime, but it is also a labour-intensive solution. One never used to have a choice in the matter, but nowadays a professional digital video management solution can reduce a CCTV system’s labour demands considerably. Normally, you would have to employ a team of security personnel that sit in a control room 24 hours a day, keeping an eye on all the video feeds.
Remote Surveillance
IP video management solutions have changed all that and now you can log into a secure website and watch your cameras’ feeds remotely via the Internet. A digital video management solution that incorporates IP cameras in a network gives you the power of the Internet and makes the video feeds available far beyond the normal closed circuit of a CCTV system. The image feeds can even be relayed straight to an armed response company, saving you having to employ control room personnel.
All-Encompassing Digital Video Management
In tandem with your surveillance camera network, you would also require a digital video recorder to record all the footage. Video takes up a lot of space, so you can usually select a compressed format that saves space and allows more footage to be recorded on the same space. This video management system should be well-designed to allow you easy access to the footage later.
The following brands manufacture excellent DVRs that have proven themselves in the security market:
- Axis
- Bosch
- Samsung
- Pelco
- Honeywell
Surveillance camera footage is admissible as evidence in a court of law, so it is imperative that you employ a digital video management system that indexes your footage in a logical and easily understandable way. You need quick access to the footage from a specific day and a specific camera in case of a security breach, even if this date is well into the past.
